7 Beautiful Islands in Africa you have to Visit

    • 3 min read

Africa is a warm wealth of cultural excellence and the second largest continent (after Asia), covering about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth. The continent is bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean, and on the south by the mingling waters of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

Bounded by these many water bodies, Africa is bound to have wonderful Islands located in several countries on the continent where visitors from around the world can visit and have a perfect resort experience.
Here are our top seven picks:

    1. Mauritius Island: Mauritius, known officially as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation located off the southeast coast of the African continent in the Indian Ocean. It is a volcanic island of lagoons and palm-fringed beaches with coral reefs surrounding most of the coastline.

    2. Lamu Island, Kenya: Lying just off Kenya's far north coast is a string of beautiful Indian Ocean islands - Lamu, Manda, Pate, Kiwayu and Manda Toto - known collectively as the Lamu Archipelago. An area of archaeological and historical interest as well as great natural beauty, these islands are well worth visiting for a more tranquil and away-from-the-crowds Kenya beach holiday, especially when compared to the busier and more developed central and southern parts of the coast.

      3. Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique: The idyllic islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique are known for their unspoilt beauty and diverse ecologies. The pristine coral reefs are home to more than 2000 fish species as well as whales and dolphins.

Needless to say, the diving and snorkelling in the Bazaruto Marine National Park is superb and sought after by many travellers. Mozambique visitors who would just like to get away from it all will find Bazaruto just the place to relax, sip cocktails and indulge in a delicious seafood beach dinner or perhaps sail away on a dhow for a castaway picnic!

      4. Praslin Island, Seychelles: One of the Seychelles’ most popular destinations, Praslin is home to fantastic beaches and intimate hotels and resorts. Soak up the sun in style while you keep a sunglassed eye out for the very rare bird species that dwell on Praslin, including the Seychelles bulbul and the black parrot. Praslin National Park in the island's south contains the spectacular palm forest of Vallée de Mai. Divers love the ancient coral reefs off Praslin's shores.

      5. Sal Island, Cape Verde: What can best be described as a beach lover’s paradise, Sal is the archipelago’s most popular island for holidaymakers, and it’s no surprise why. With golden sandy beaches sinking into azure waters, windows into the island’s past and some truly spectacular natural phenomena to admire, Sal successfully caters for many kinds of holidaymaker.

      6. Nosy Be Island, Madagascar: Nosy Be, which means “big island” in Malagasy, is Madagascar’s most popular beach resort thanks to its laid-back towns, unique wildlife, and amazing snorkelling. Located just off the coast of Africa, the world's oldest island is home to weird and wonderful animals, a lot of which cannot be found anywhere else on earth. From a chameleon the size of your little finger to an inch-long frog, these bizarre creatures have evolved in isolation for over 60 million years, and coming face to face with them is an experience of a lifetime. For those who don’t fancy a jungle trek, Nosy Be offers much more: year-round sunshine, bright blue seas, and a vibrant nightlife.

      7. Moheli Islands, Comoros: Despite being the smallest island in the archipelago has the Comoros' largest biodiversity, over land and under the sea. Here you can find, among numerous endemic species, the biggest populations of green turtle, imbricated turtle, Livingston bats, and during the months of June to April, humpback whales crossing the Mozambique Channel. In Moheli you will find the most beautiful beaches in the country, the nature is just superb everywhere. The more popular beaches are Nioumachoua and Itsamia
